Queens University of Charlotte was officially established in 1857, first starting as Charlotte Female Institute, being founded by the Reverend and Mrs. Burwell. After changing its name and mission, several times, over the years, the institution has finally adopted its current name in June, 2002, when it gained university status.
Today, Queens University offers its students educational programs in numerous fields of study, including majors in areas such as art, biology, chemistry, drama, mathematics or journalism, concentrations in art management, sociology, political history and graphic design, as well as pre-professional programs in law, medicine and physical therapy.
Queens' athletic teams identify themselves as the Queens Royals, and they compete in NCAA Division II, in the Conference Carolinas, in several sports for both men and women such as basketball, lacrosse, tennis, volleyball, and track & field. Their distinctive colors are navy, white and gold, and their mascot is known as Rex.
The Queens Sports Complex has a statue of Rex, the largest standing lion sculpture in the world.
